First Dates
(for Ages 16-18)

Pick up trash in a section of your community. There are local cleanups organized within the community, or stretches of roads sponsored by different organizations. But you don't have join a group. Look around and see the need.

Get a good-sized group together around a large fire and have a sing along. Ask those in the group that can play guitars, harmonica, or accordions to bring them along for accompaniment. You might print up words to some songs. Bring supplies for roasting marshmallows.

Attend a gymnastics meet (a unique sports event which is interesting to watch).

Set up plastic pop bottles on the fence and have a contest to knock off the bottles with a super soaker gun. Be prepared for a water fight, which is inevitable.

Buy two balsa wood planes. Go to a balcony of a tall building. Let 'em fly - then run to the bottom to retrieve them and head back up again for another flight.

Have an old-fashioned taffy pull. Each couple colors, flavors and twists their own batch of taffy.

Exercise together (jogging, yoga, tai-bo, aerobics class, weight lifting, etc.).

Plan a study date. Be sure you have a well-lighted spot with no interruptions from the outside. While you're working, take refreshment and stretching breaks about every hour.

Volunteer to prepare and serve dinner at an orphanage or a local homeless shelter. While service in needed throughout the year, there are greater needs during various holidays. You can also donate canned and packaged goods. Find out what are their unique needs.

Start a collection such as butterflies, coins, stamps, rocks, etc. You could use the collection to fill a class requirement or just as an excuse to get together.

Make houses out of cookies, candy, cardboard and frosting, or decorate gingerbread men. Have everyone bring bags of candy for decorations to share. Working in pairs: have each couple bake and decorate their house.

Have a "Bring your own topping" waffle party (i.e. whipped topping, strawberries, blueberries, ice cream, peaches, apple sauce, bacon, etc.).

Enjoy sitting around a fireplace eating popcorn and visiting with your friends. Spend the time telling your favorite jokes and stories.

Participate in a Church or community service project. Look in the local paper for opportunities.

Invite several guys to have dinner at a hosts' home. Their dates (the girls) should be in grubbies waiting at the host home for the guys to arrive. Ask the guys if they are hungry and seat them at the table. Bring out the spaghetti and salad, etc. and dump the food on a plastic tablecloth in the middle of the table. Then reach over and bring servings into your area and start eating (no plates allowed). They will get over the initial shock. This is a great ice breaker.
